Our CEO Disrupts RVA About Ageism

Circle Center CEO, Heather Turbyne-Pollard was one of 10 leaders in RVA selected to speak at this year's Disrupt RVA event in late September. A "Ted Talk-like" format, Disrupt RVA gives each speaker five minutes and 15 slides to share their point-of-view on a relevant topic, in this case, on something HR-related.

Heather's talk was titled, "The Hidden 'E' in DEI" and she didn't hold back. Heather pointed out that many businesses undervalue older workers--that while we've worked hard for more diversity, equity, and inclusion, we continue to exclude older adults. The hidden 'E'.

Adult Day Shouldn't Be A Luxury

There are realities facing RVA right now that reinforce the value of adult day services and the need for more of it:

• The number of older adults in our metro area is growing faster than any other time in history and will continue long after the last baby boomers turn 65 in 2030.
• Consequently, the number of older adults unable to safely remain at home alone is growing.
• However, in a recent AARP survey, a full 90% of the 65+ cohort wish to remain in their homes, near family and their community, for as long as possible.
• More and more individuals are providing unpaid care to an older adult, in addition to working, parenting, and fulfilling other roles. They're burnt out.

Sadly, in-home care and institutional care are cost prohibitive for many families.

Enter Circle Center. As a nonprofit, we have a proven model of quality care, in a safe, supervised space that promotes a sense of well-being and friendships. Re-read that sentence and you'll agree, these are not luxuries. They are necessities for more and more of us and therefore, adult day must remain affordable.

We do what we do thanks to your support. We hope that you'll consider including us in your yearend giving plans. This month, we've set a goal to raise $20,000 in honor of Giving Tuesday and by yearend an additional $40,000. These are very ambitious goals for our organization, but now is not the time for us to shy away from our work.

We're all growing older and together, we can make that a more positive, less stressful experience for those going before us and for each other down the road.
