Professional Caregivers: the Backbone of Aging Services

At Circle Center, we are strong because of the dedicated professionals who provide care and support to our participants every day. Today, we are especially pleased to focus on these invaluable professionals on National Caregivers Day 2023, which also recognizes the millions of family caregivers.

Get to know why two of our valued caregivers do what they do:

"Working with older adults has opened my eyes--we will all be in their shoes one day. Nursing is very rewarding, but I hope my work with older adults specifically will inspire others to get into this field. It takes people who want to care for others like they are their own family," says Hazel Snead, RN.

Latrice Payne, PCA added, "I love the bonding that naturally happens between our participants and staff. They really trust us and I love showing compassion and kindness to them. I was nervous when I started, but connected with Delia right away. We trust each other."

"Our programming and interdisciplinary team approach coupled with our professional caregivers--CNAs and PCAs--is what makes the joy and peace of mind we see in our participants and their family caregivers every day," says Heather Turbyne-Pollard, CEO.

The national workforce shortage is affecting aging services organizations locally. Aging services providers, especially nonprofits like ours, need public officials to act to help us continue to hire and retain the candidates best qualified to deliver quality care that meets our standards.

On National Caregivers Day 2023, we ask you to support our community and our devoted professional caregivers by contacting your elected officials. You can do that by supporting the federal action calling for cosponsors of the Better Care Better Jobs Act.

Just how important are these individuals to older adults and families nationally? Professional caregivers provide support to 20 million older adults who require assistance. Here’s a snapshot of the professional caregiver workforce in our state:

  • Direct care workers in Virginia: 91,580
  • Direct care professionals who are women: 88%
  • Projected number of new jobs needed to meet rising demand: 22,060

We need to attract and keep these dedicated, compassionate professionals now and in the future in order to do right by our growing population of older adults. Thank you for recognizing the exemplary caregivers at Circle Center and taking action to support them and their colleagues across the nation.
