Our participants’ safety – here and in their homes – is of utmost importance to us. That’s why we asked Jennifer Perry, MS,OTR/L from Benchmark Senior Solutions to present at our Caregiver Support Group last month. Here are helpful tips from her session, “Staying Safe in Your Home.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), falls are the most common cause of injury and injury-related death for people aged 65+. Individuals can help reduce the risk of falls by staying active and keeping their environment safe.

Here are some ways to maintain a safe environment at home:

  • Remove clutter and throw rugs
  • Tidy loose cords
  • Ensure adequate lighting
  • Bathe and dress seated instead of standing
  • Use mobility devices as instructed (no furniture walking!)
  • Avoid chairs with wheels
  • In the shower, consider using grab bars, reachers, and a shower chair/bench
  • Use a raised toilet seat
  • Consider an alert pendant system (bracelet or necklace)
  • Use lever handles instead of doorknobs
  • Use a ramp for entry in/out of the home
