Tips for Home Safety

Our participants’ safety – here and in their homes – is of utmost importance to us. That’s why we asked Jennifer Perry, MS,OTR/L from Benchmark Senior Solutions to present at our Caregiver Support Group last month. Here are helpful tips from her session, “Staying Safe in Your Home”:
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), falls are the most common cause of injury and injury-related death for people aged 65+. Individuals can help reduce the risk of falls by staying active and keeping their environment safe.
Here are some ways to maintain a safe environment at home:
- Remove clutter and throw rugs
- Tidy loose cords
- Ensure adequate lighting
- Bathe and dress seated instead of standing
- Use mobility devices as instructed (no furniture walking!)
- Avoid chairs with wheels
- In the shower, consider using grab bars, reachers, and a shower chair/bench
- Use a raised toilet seat
- Consider an alert pendant system (bracelet or necklace)
- Use lever handles instead of doorknobs
- Use a ramp for entry in/out of the home
